SPOKANE, Wash. — At HeatPraxia in downtown Coeur d'Alene, you can see the damage before you even step inside. A chunk of frozen carpet, a water-damaged window, but what's on the other side of the door could mean your business is closed for a while.
“You know we have the misfortune of something like this happening,” said Joel Cruz, co-owner of HeatPraxia.
Reality hit hard on Tuesday when Cruz opened Heatpraxia in Coeur d'Alene.
“As I walked up there, it looked like a steam room, and the hot water was actually falling. When I walked in, it was like being in a water park. Water was pouring down like a shower. ” he said.
Receive the soothing heat of the sauna before jumping into the cool space. Other stores in historic downtown Coeur d'Alene buildings were also damaged, but Cruz said HeatPraxia took the brunt.
“We were preparing to grow and expand, but overnight it was all taken away from us and we were going to take a huge step backwards.”
The future of small businesses is currently cloudy. Some customers are still paying with their accounts, but Cruz said he hopes the store will be renovated or rebuilt in a different location.
They're waiting to see how much insurance will cover, but the reality is that ceiling-to-floor repairs could mean long-term interruptions.
“We serve a community that needs this kind of natural health. And to strip that away is absolutely the worst. Absolutely the worst,” Cruz said.
